The Enduring Fantasy of “Feeding the World”

This article challenges the dominant idea that global hunger can be solved simply by producing more food. The authors argue that this “feed-the-world” narrative—rooted in colonial and capitalist logics—frames hunger as a problem of insufficient supply rather than inequality and access, while legitimising industrial agriculture and corporate control over land and resources. Despite decades of yield increases, food insecurity and ecological harm persist, revealing the limits of productivist solutions. Instead, the article calls for a shift toward agroecology, food sovereignty, and justice-centred approaches that prioritise local autonomy, ecological health, and the right of all communities to define their own food systems.

Influence of technology adoption on farmers’ well-being: Systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis

This study aimed at determining the effects of technology adoption on farmers’ well-being. Specifically, we analysed and extended the current understanding of the topic by focusing on the concepts of technology adoption and well-being. Most papers indicated that technology adoption improved farmers’ well-being which was basically measured using productivity and income. The measure however lacked farmers’ value judgments, such as happiness. Agricultural technology could have a mixed effect on farmers’ well-being, depending on the type of technology adopted and the compatibility of farmers with technology in their agricultural practices.

‘Feeding the world, byte by byte’: emergent imaginaries of data productivism

Recent scholarship has shed light on how data-driven food systems may entrench productivist and neo-productivist visions of ‘feeding the world.’ In this paper, we examine the narratives and institution-building practices of global development actors, asking: What stories do they tell about how data will transform food systems? Whose ‘data’ are legitimized and whose are overlooked? Our findings point to an emerging imaginary of data productivism—which constructs the making and accumulation of data as a socially intrinsic good. We examine the implications of data productivism for reconfiguring global capitalism, reproducing the modern-colonial order, and inciting social movements to anticipate its hold.

Why are agri-food systems resistant to new directions of change? A systematic review

A central concern about achieving global food security is reconfiguring agri-food systems towards sustainability. However, historically-informed trajectories of agri-food system development remain resistant to a change in direction. Through a systematic literature review, we identify three research domains exploring this phenomenon and six explanations of resistance: embedded nature of technologies, misaligned institutional settings, individual attitudes, political economy factors, infrastructural rigidities, research and innovation priorities. We find ambiguities in the use of the terms lock-in and path-dependency, which often weaken the analysis. We suggest a framing that deals with interdependencies and temporal dynamics of causes of resistance. Finally, we discuss implications for framing innovation for transformational change and other research gaps.

Higher yields and more biodiversity on smaller farms

Small farms constitute most of the world’s farms and are a central focus of sustainable agricultural development. However, the relationship between farm size and production, profitability, biodiversity and greenhouse gas emissions remains contested. Here, we synthesize current knowledge through an evidence review and meta-analysis and show that smaller farms, on average, have higher yields and harbour greater crop and non-crop biodiversity at the farm and landscape scales than do larger farms. We find little conclusive evidence for differences in resource-use efficiency, greenhouse gas emission intensity and profits. Our findings highlight the importance of farm size in mediating some environmental and social outcomes relevant to sustainable development. We identify a series of research priorities to inform land- and market-based policies that affect smallholders globally.
