In the run up to the key votes and debates on synthetic biology at the IUCN Congress in Abu Dhabi (9-15 October), IUCN will be hosting online discussions on motions related to gene editing in conservation from 23 April – 23 June. These discussions could significantly impact future conservation policy and practice.

This FREE webinar – co-organised by Save our Seeds (EU), Pollinis (FR) and A Bigger Conversation (UK) – is an opportunity for IUCN members, NGOs and environmentalists, academics and others to explore some of the issues around synthetic biology and conservation and to equip themselves with the knowledge needed to effectively engage in these important discussions.

You can expect:

  •  Expert presentations on the science and policy implications
  • Analysis of key motions under consideration
  • Case study examination of gene editing applications in conservation
  • Practical guidance for IUCN members on participating in the upcoming IUCN discussions
  • Practical guidance for non-IUCN members for engaging with this issue
  • Open discussion and Q&A

Synthetic biology, biotechnology, and genetic engineering are making their way into conservation – but what does that mean for ecosystems, ethics, and conservation practices?

Join us for a discussion with conservationists, scientists and NGOs as we explore the use of genetic technologies in conservation through three case studies: genetically modified trees, gene drives, and biotech interventions in marine ecosystems.
